In the battle against smog, Wapda will disconnect power to factories releasing pollution, following directives from the Lahore High Court.

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has consistently issued directives to disconnect electricity for industries contributing to environmental pollution. Recently, Justice Shahid Karim of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) instructed WAPDA to promptly take action against such industries based on the commission's report.

During the hearing of a smog remediation application, various departments submitted reports, prompting the LHC to advise WASA to utilize stored canal water and encourage the conservation of ablution water. The court has adjourned the hearing on related petitions until the following week.

In a separate initiative, the Sindh Environment Protection Agency (EPA) launched a daylong campaign targeting smoke-emitting vehicles to mitigate environmental pollution in the metropolitan city. Despite a three-day weekend, Lahore's air quality remained severely toxic, earning it the designation of the world's second most polluted city on Tuesday.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Lahore reached a hazardous level of 288 on Tuesday morning, surpassing the World Health Organization's air quality guidelines by 48 times. Specific areas within Lahore, such as Garden Town, Gulberg, Defence, Garhi Shahu, and The Mall Road, reported even higher AQI levels, posing significant health risks. Typically, an AQI of 50 or lower is considered normal.

New Delhi, the capital of India, topped the global list of the most polluted cities. The pervasive smog in Lahore has led to severe respiratory problems and related infections among citizens, prompting medical advice for the use of masks when venturing outside. The pressing issue of air quality remains a significant concern, underscoring the need for stringent measures to address pollution and protect public health.
