In Gujranwala, PML-N senior leader Khurram Dastgir Khan stated on Tuesday that while seat adjustment with the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) is possible, the discussion on their "significant agenda" is yet to take place.
Addressing the IPP's reported demand for numerous constituencies, including some crucial ones, Dastgir mentioned that decisive negotiations became challenging after the substantial request from the party led by Jahangir Tareen.
Dastgir stated that the PML-N would discuss where to allocate space to IPP after finalizing decisions on ticket distribution. Talks between the two parties reached an impasse, with the PML-N, led by Shehbaz Sharif, showing reluctance to form an alliance on many of its seats.
Sources had previously reported that the IPP sought adjustments on 50 provincial assembly seats and 26 National Assembly seats. The PML-N was hesitant to form alliances on seats where its top leaders would contest, and they were unwilling to enter alliances on numerous other seats as well.
Dastgir clarified that there was no pressure to accommodate the IPP in Punjab, expressing the PML-N's intention to involve other parties in seat adjustments to ensure political stability in the upcoming assemblies.
Regarding reservations about the delimitations by the ECP, Dastgir mentioned that the PML-N had concerns over the new delimitations across the country. Despite objections raised by political parties, the Supreme Court ruled on December 13 that challenges to delimitations cannot be entertained after the announcement of the election schedule.
Taking a swipe at the PTI, Dastgir expressed disappointment that even the issue of the party's electoral symbol became politicized. He emphasized that it is the electoral body's responsibility to decide on the PTI's symbol, and the party has the option to approach the court.
PTI announced its intention to approach the Peshawar High Court to reclaim the electoral symbol 'bat' after the ECP revoked the symbol. PTI spokesperson Muazzam Butt mentioned that they would request the court to schedule the petition for a hearing on the same day.
