Lahore has regained its status as the most polluted city, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching 444.

On Tuesday, Lahore recorded an average Air Quality Index (AQI) of 397, with the AQI reaching 444 in Amir Town. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) stated that there is no rain forecast for the next 24 hours, indicating a likelihood of persistent smog in the provincial capital. Health experts are advising individuals to avoid unnecessary travel and wear face masks when outdoors.

In response to the smog issue, the Lahore High Court issued a directive on Monday, instructing the Punjab government to close all schools and colleges on Saturdays. The court also recommended a two-day remote work arrangement for employers. Additionally, the court ordered the removal of the Director General of the Environment Protection Department (EPD) for failing to effectively address the smog problem.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution claims the lives of 4.2 million people worldwide annually. An AQI level of 400-500 is hazardous to both healthy individuals and those with pre-existing conditions, while a level of 150-200 causes discomfort for people with asthma, lung issues, and heart problems. AQI levels of 0-50 are considered good.
