PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi faced re-arrest immediately upon being released from Adiala jail, where he had obtained bail from the Supreme Court in the cypher case four days earlier. Despite the court's bail grant on December 22 to Qureshi and former Prime Minister Imran Khan, their release was delayed due to involvement in other ongoing cases. On Wednesday, Qureshi was apprehended by Rawalpindi Police in connection with the GHQ attack case. Following the revocation of his detention orders by Rawalpindi Deputy Commissioner Hasan Waqar Cheema, Qureshi's re-arrest occurred. The arrest pertained to allegations of attacking GHQ during the May 9 riots, with Qureshi expected to appear before an anti-terrorism court for remand. Expressing frustration, Qureshi argued that his release on bail was being met with cruelty, emphasizing his service to the nation. PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar called for the Supreme Court's intervention, emphasizing Qureshi's significance to the party. He stressed the need for fair elections and questioned the justification for Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO), urging the judiciary to protect people's rights and security. The developments raise concerns about Qureshi's legal status and broader implications for justice and politics in the region. In a separate incident, despite expectations of Qureshi's release, he was detained for 15 days under Section 3 of the MPO Ordinance, citing potential threats to peace and security due to his alleged involvement in the GHQ attack. The detention order, issued by Rawalpindi Deputy Commissioner Hassan Waqar Cheema, highlighted Qureshi's political affiliation and the perceived risk of him engaging in anti-state activities. Despite subsequent release orders from the Special Court Judge Abul Hasnat Zulqarnain in the cypher case, Qureshi remained detained due to the timing of the release order issuance. The cypher case involves a piece of paper waved by Imran Khan at a public rally, alleging an international conspiracy to topple his government. Qureshi, who was the foreign minister at the time, was indicted in the case on October 23.
