Punjab declares a day off for schools and offices due to deteriorating smog conditions.

Today, Wednesday, the leadership of the region convened a meeting led by the interim Chief Minister of Punjab, Mohsin Naqvi. Given the current circumstances, authorities have decided to close schools and offices across the region on Saturday, November 18.

The provincial capital, Lahore, and various parts of the region are grappling with severe air pollution due to rapid urbanization. The metropolis consistently ranks as one of the most polluted cities globally, with reports indicating dangerously high levels of air pollution.

In Lahore, the concentration of PM 2.5 in the air recently reached nearly 400, signifying a hazardous situation. Following today's meeting, the caretaker Chief Minister addressed the media, outlining the measures being implemented to combat the smog.

In response to the worsening air quality, the Lahore High Court (LHC) had earlier directed the Punjab government to close all schools and colleges on Saturdays, as previous efforts to control smog had proven ineffective.

Last week, Lahore and several other regions experienced a four-day holiday, during which some markets were initially closed but later allowed to reopen after rainfall.
