Pat Cummins reveals the lineup for the Perth Test against Pakistan in the Pakistan vs Australia cricket series.

Australian captain Pat Cummins revealed the playing XI for the first Test against Pakistan in Perth, naming Travis Head as the co vice-captain. The teams are in Perth for the opening match of the three-game Benaud-Qadir Trophy series. Apart from the reinstatement of Head, there were no other surprises in the squad for the men’s international summer season. Steve Smith is designated as the primary option to lead the team in Cummins' absence. The only change from the recent Ashes finale is the return of Nathan Lyon in place of Todd Murphy.

The formidable pace trio of Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood, instrumental in Australia's World Cup victory last month, will reunite. David Warner is set to open the batting, with the veteran under scrutiny leading up to the match. If selected, Warner, aged 37, is expected to retire after the final match of this series in Sydney.

Mitch Marsh, playing in his first Test at Perth Stadium, will showcase his skills in front of his home crowd, maintaining his status as the preferred all-rounder over Cameron Green. Former vice-captain Travis Head is back in that role, a position he held during the Tim Paine era.

The announced Australia squad for the first Test includes Pat Cummins (c), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitch Marsh, Lance Morris, Steve Smith, Mitch Starc, and David Warner.

On the other side, Pakistan's squad for the Test series includes Shan Masood (c), Aamir Jamal, Abdullah Shafique, Abrar Ahmed, Babar Azam, Faheem Ashraf, Hasan Ali, Imam-ul-Haq, Khurram Shahzad, Mir Hamza, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Mohammad Wasim Jnr, Noman Ali, Saim Ayub, Salman Ali Agha, Sarfaraz Ahmed (wk), Saud Shakeel, and Shaheen Shah Afridi.

The Test series schedule is as follows:

  • First Test: December 14-18, Perth Stadium
  • Second Test: December 26-30, MCG
  • Third Test: January 3-7, SCG
