Shehbaz Sharif emphasizes the importance of conducting elections punctually.

Shehbaz Sharif, the President of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), emphasized the importance of conducting the general elections on time, scheduled for February 8 next year. Speaking to journalists after appearing before an accountability court in Lahore for the Ramzan Sugar Mills reference filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), the former prime minister stated that holding timely elections is both a legal requirement and essential for democracy.

Addressing the upcoming election campaign, Shehbaz mentioned that PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif would unveil the party manifesto, underscoring that they are launching the campaign thoroughly prepared. Responding to concerns raised by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) regarding equal opportunities in the upcoming polls, Shehbaz asserted that appearing in court exemplifies a level playing field, emphasizing that Nawaz Sharif would also present himself in an Islamabad court.

Reflecting on the challenges faced by the Sharif family, Shehbaz praised Nawaz Sharif's adherence to the law, noting his return to Pakistan after exile and the family's respect for the judiciary. Discussing the incidents of May 9, Shehbaz stressed that any facilitation of those involved would be against national interests, citing a conspiracy to overthrow the army and emphasizing that no democratic government would tolerate treason.

During the court hearing, Shehbaz addressed the circumstances of his arrest, stating that he was summoned for the clean water case but arrested in the Ashiana reference. He refrained from discussing the case's merits, deferring to his lawyer, and highlighted the court's previous delivery of justice in the Ashiana case. Shehbaz also detailed his arrest in the sewer case, explaining the allegations related to a directive for drain construction issued during his tenure. Additionally, he pointed out the installation of numerous clean water projects and the transfer of the inherited sugar mill to his son, emphasizing that his government did not provide subsidies to sugar mills during his tenure.
