Lahore High Court mandates school closure on November 18, suggests a two-day remote work approach to mitigate smog.

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has mandated the closure of schools on November 18 and suggested a two-day remote work policy to combat smog in Punjab. The caretaker government in Punjab declared a "smog emergency" on November 1, responding to the LHC's directive to urgently address the hazardous air quality in the region, categorized as 'poor.' Justice Shahid Karim, during a smog-related petition hearing, held the government accountable for the smog crisis. The Air Quality Index (AQI) for Lahore is reported at 134. In response to the smog issue, Justice Karim ordered the closure of schools and colleges on Saturdays and recommended a two-day work-from-home policy. Expressing dissatisfaction with the Commissioner of Lahore's efforts, Justice Karim called for the immediate replacement of district commissioners in several areas and urged the government to provide electric motorcycles for local staff. The hearing is adjourned until Wednesday.
