IPP senior leader Imran Ismail asserted on Tuesday that Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Vice Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), discussed the prospect of creating his own faction within the party during a meeting in jail. Ismail, a former PTI politician from Sindh, clarified details about the meeting with the senior PTI leader on a social media platform, stating that the meeting was scheduled at Qureshi's request.
In his online statement, the former Sindh governor emphasized that he never urged the imprisoned former foreign minister, who is detained for his alleged involvement in the May 9 riots, to leave the party. Ismail made it clear that the meeting took place as per Qureshi's wish, revealing that Qureshi expressed a desire to establish his own group, but Ismail and others declined to offer support.
Ismail's remarks come amidst Qureshi's candidacy for the upcoming general elections on February 8. While the exact date of the meeting is not specified, it occurred following the May 9 riots and the subsequent arrests related to the violence, triggered by Imran Khan's arrest in a corruption case.
During the meeting in Adiala Jail in June 2022, Ismail, along with PTI defectors Fawad Chaudhry and Mahmood Molvi, engaged with Qureshi. Reports suggested that the visitors attempted to convince Qureshi to part ways with the PTI. Qureshi's son, Zain Hussain Qureshi, refuted media reports about his father's meeting with former PTI leaders, asserting their commitment to PTI and Imran Khan's ideology.
