Gen Asim Munir embarks on a significant official visit to the US in his capacity as Chief of Army Staff.

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir has embarked on an official visit to the United States, as confirmed by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) in a statement released on Sunday.

This marks General Syed Asim Munir's inaugural visit to the USA since assuming the role of COAS. His agenda includes meetings with senior military and other governmental officials in the United States.

The COAS's visit follows a series of recent visits by high-profile American officials to Pakistan. A key focus during these interactions has been on the security challenges posed by the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and issues related to Afghan refugees.

Several US officials, including a senior Biden administration official responsible for refugee issues, Julieta Valls Noyes, and US Special Envoy for Afghanistan Tom West, conducted visits to Islamabad. These visits were part of a diplomatic effort amid strained relations between Pakistan, Afghanistan, and the ongoing crackdown on illegal Afghan residents in Pakistan.

Thomas West, the United States Special Representative for Afghanistan, emphasized the importance of collaboration on security challenges posed by TTP and the protection of Afghan refugees during his visit.

The surge in American official visits coincides with Pakistan's efforts to address the presence of illegal Afghan residents following a deadline expiration. The US has engaged in discussions with Pakistan to safeguard eligible Afghans who qualify for immigration to the United States.

Prominent journalist and anchorperson Kamran Khan highlighted the significance of General Asim Munir's visit to the US, noting that he is the first Pakistani army chief to visit since General Raheel Sharif in November 2015. Khan underscored the critical timing of the visit amid global conflicts, including those in Gaza and Ukraine, the challenges posed by the Taliban in Afghanistan, and upcoming elections in both Pakistan and India.

According to Khan, during General Asim Munir's weeklong visit, meetings are anticipated with key US figures, including Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, CIA Director William Burns, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Charles Q Brown Jr.
