Health officials have announced the detection of four instances of the JN.1 sub-variant of COVID-19.

On Sunday night, health authorities confirmed the identification of four cases of the JN.1 sub-variant of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in the country. All affected individuals, who had entered from abroad, exhibited mild symptoms and recovered without medical intervention. The National Health Services, Regulations, and Coordination (NHS,R&C) official reported that these cases were detected through genome sequencing after positive COVID-19 tests. The World Health Organization has designated the JN.1 sub-variant as a Variant of Concern (VoI), and it is rapidly supplanting other Omicron sub-variants globally.

Pakistan initiated mandatory testing of two percent of inbound passengers for COVID-19, with samples sent for genome sequencing to identify the JN.1 sub-variant. This measure was implemented following the detection of this sub-variant in neighboring India and other countries. Caretaker Federal Health Minister Dr. Nadeem Jan urged against panic, citing a 90 percent vaccination rate among the Pakistani population. He assured that border health services authorities were actively following international health regulations. Dr. Jan emphasized the importance of preventive measures, including mask usage, frequent hand washing, and social distancing to safeguard against flu, respiratory illnesses, and COVID-19.
